Community Consultation / Covid-19

05/08/2020

How do we do effective and informative community consultation during Covid-19 lockdown?

This is a situation we found ourselves in as Covid-19 lockdown hit. We are working with Queens Cross Housing Association on the ambitious Woodside Making Places project, which will make large-scale improvements to green-spaces in and around the Woodside area of Glasgow.

Engaging residents of >1,000 homes is not an easy problem to solve.

The main problem we identified was how we show the design information. Face-to-face community engagement sessions are still not on the cards, but we want those important bits of information and ideas that can really help shape a project.

We took a multi-layered approach: online, in homes, and on the ground:

Online, by creating a bespoke consultation website in-house where we can show design information and collect feedback on sketch proposals.

In homes, we delivered a letter & leaflet outlining the project and ways in which people could feed back to us, through the website, by email, in writing and telephone.

On the ground, with printed boards (much along the lines of those we would show at a consultation) and stencilling on the ground to direct people towards the website.
