An exciting new social housing project on this former school site helps to rejuvenate the local area.

The site sits between the town centre and the wider Springburn community, dug into the sloping terrain of Balgrayhill. This created the opportunity to fashion a new mini-community with its own identity, linking back to the history of the school.

The architecture, designed by Page\Park Architects, incorporates a mix of 2, 3 and 4 storey flat apartments cascading down the slope from the existing high wall at Balgrayhill. A flipped geometry helped to create accessible living spaces on a challenging site, with small home-zone shared-surface courtyards framing the entrance to the buildings.

The landscape strategy for the site is defined around a hierarchy of public and private areas, each having their own character. These spaces fulfil a number of functions, including parking, play, growing and seating as well as refuse storage and SuDS drainage, all linked by a common palette of soft and hard materials that reflect the architecture and the surroundings.
