StatusCompleted 2014

After completing the refurbishment of The Royal & Ancient Clubhouse in 2002, we returned to the ‘alma mater’ of golf in 2012 to redesign the First Tee, making it more suitable for the 21st century game. Working within the context of this iconic listed building and famous golf course, we built on the palette of sandstone, ironwork and resin-bound gravel, remaining sympathetic to its historic setting.

Decluttering barriers, simplifying surface finishes and reorganising the site has subtly changed the First Tee, yet retained the world-renowned image of the club. Careful detailing to levels and light-touches in the context of the listed buildings have helped incorporate the new pavilion into the landscape. The Caddie Pavilion was relocated and a new reception pavilion constructed in its place. Bus access and improved pedestrian connections help the new structure function, servicing the modern demands of the club.
